With digital priorities shifting rapidly, all businesses are under immense pressure to keep their IT environments efficient, resilient, and adaptable. Workload automation (WLA) is a critical tool in achieving this, yet many organisations struggle to implement and scale it effectively. According to BMC’s EMA report on the Future of Workload Automation, 66% of IT leaders see WLA as vital to digital transformation – but many still face major adoption hurdles.

1. Legacy Systems and Outdated Infrastructure is Slowing EVERYONE Down

For many enterprises (and this is no surprise if you work in one) legacy systems are a major roadblock to WLA adoption. These outdated platforms lack the flexibility required for modern workload automation, making integration difficult.

The report highlights that a startling 42% of organisations still rely on manual interventions to manage workloads. This is not only inefficient it’s risky.

2. Skills Shortages Are Stalling Workload Automation’s Progress

The tools might be there, but the talent isn’t always. A shortage of expertise in workload automation is another major challenge. 57% of IT leaders cite a lack of in-house skills as a primary barrier to implementing advanced WLA solutions.

Without the right expertise, businesses struggle to configure, optimise, and maintain their automation environments effectively. Without the right knowledge, it’s tough to unlock the full value of WLA or even get it off the ground in the first place.

3. Struggles Scaling Across Hybrid Environments

Scaling WLA solutions to accommodate growing business needs is no small feat. 60% of companies report difficulties in scaling their automation strategies across hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

As organisations expand, they require automation platforms that can seamlessly integrate with diverse infrastructures while maintaining performance and security. It’s not just about growing bigger – it’s about staying connected, coordinated, and secure.

4. Compliance and Governance Challenges

Automation doesn’t mean compliance can take a back seat. With increasing regulatory requirements, IT teams must ensure that their WLA solutions adhere to stringent compliance and security standards.

However, 39% of organisations struggle with maintaining governance and auditability in automated processes, which can lead to security vulnerabilities and regulatory penalties. And nobody in your organisation wants that.
