What to avoid in DevOps and Infrastructure Automation

April 20, 2023

Understanding the positives in DevOps and infrastructure automation is important, but it is also essential to understand what a negative effect can have if not addressed correctly. Below are some tips on what to avoid.

1. Lack of planning:

One of the biggest mistakes that we have seen businesses make is not having a proper plan in place before starting with DevOps and infrastructure automation. It’s important to have a clear understanding of the goals and develop a roadmap that outlines the steps needed to achieve them.

2. Overly complex processes:

A favourite quote by our Technical Director Adam Lovick is that ‘if a process is complex, it’s probably wrong and if it isn’t it probably should be!’ Automation should simplify processes, not make them more complex. It’s important to keep things simple and avoid creating overly complex processes that are difficult to manage and maintain.

3. Lack of testing:

Testing is crucial in DevOps and infrastructure automation. It’s important to have a robust testing strategy in place to ensure that the changes being made do not have any negative impact on the system.

4. Failure to monitor and measure:

It’s difficult to know if your DevOps and infrastructure automation efforts are having the desired impact. Make sure you have the right tools in place to monitor and measure the success of your efforts.

5. Failure to collaborate:

DevOps is all about collaboration between development, operations, and other teams. It’s important to foster a culture of collaboration and communication to ensure that everyone is on the same page. By not co-operating as a team, you are setting your business up for failure.

6. Lack of documentation:

Proper documentation is essential in DevOps and infrastructure automation. It’s important to document everything from the planning phase through to implementation and ongoing maintenance.

7. Lack of security:

One of the key requirements is security, it should be a top priority in DevOps and infrastructure automation. Make sure you have the right security measures in place to protect your system and data.

8. Resistance to change:

It’s important to embrace change and be willing to adapt to new processes and technologies. Resistance to change can hinder progress and prevent you from realising the full benefits of DevOps and infrastructure automation.

Getting the right help to navigate the process and achieve success is essential.
